A large contingent of high school cross country teams and hundreds of runners from California and Nevada took part in the 32nd Kiwanis Laker Mountain Motivational on Friday.

The annual meet, also called the North Tahoe Invitational, offered a 2.5-mile run for ninth- and 10th-grade runners and about a 3.2- to 3.3-mile race for juniors and seniors, said Robbie McClendon, head coach of the Truckee High cross country team.

“It’s a challenging course for the beginning of the season,” McClendon said. “It’s pretty rugged. A lot of uphills.”

Truckee’s varsity boys placed fifth as a team behind Brete Harte, Atwater, Dayton and Rite of Passage. Lowry was sixth and North Tahoe seventh.

Brete Harte also won the varsity girls competition, followed by Lowry and Rodriguez. The Lakers placed fourth and the Wolverines eighth.

The Lakers’ ninth-grade boys took the top spot over Brete Harte and Whitney.

Individually, Truckee junior Micah Silver placed fifth in the varsity boys competition ” which featured 117 runners ” in 19 minutes, 41 seconds. Nate Chellman won in 19:03.

On the girls’ side ” which had 81 runners competing ” Hanna Casares of Truckee was 18th in 26:12 and North Tahoe’s Sierra Postler 26th in 27:06.
