Mountain Times: Another year gone by…

Norm and Alan Nichols
Special to the Sun

TAHOE/TRUCKEE and#8212; It is hard to believe that Thursday is Thanksgiving, and Christmas and New Years are right around the corner. Another year … pffft! Unbelievable!

2011 has been an incredible year of change throughout the world, throughout our country, and most certainly throughout our local communities. Much of what has changed has been very good and seems to paint a brighter future.

I am, however, very disappointed that some of the major new and#8220;playersand#8221; in the area have chosen to change the responsibilities of, or have outright dismissed, a good number of executives, department heads and local workers who have been here a very long time. These employees, along with their families, have helped to make up the fabric of our community and deserve a better fate. There is not a darn thing I can do about any of this, but now (at least), I got it off my chest!

Congratulations Truckee Wolverine football team for your third straight Nevada State AAA Football Championship and 36 straight wins. What an incredible feat. Although Truckee won the game against Moapa Valley by a 21-6 final score, the match-up was incredibly close. and#8220;Great gameand#8221; plaudits go to the players, coaches, parents and spectators alike! Everyone should have been extremely satisfied with the great athletic performances and good sportsmanship displayed by both teams both on and off the field.

Although we were not at the game, we were glued to the radio broadcast brought to us and and#8220;the whole worldand#8221; by 101.5 FM and#8220;Truckee Tahoe Radio.and#8221; Yes, J.D. Hoss and his excellent crew at 101.5 do stream their broadcasts on their website that can be heard virtually around the world. Great job to 101.5 and their great sponsors which included and#8220;J.D. Hoss Hardwoods and Carpet,and#8221; and#8220;Java Sushi,and#8221; and#8220;Blue Coyote,and#8221; and#8220;Ferree Law,and#8221; and#8220;Copy Center,and#8221; and#8220;Mountain Hardwareand#8221; and the and#8220;Law Offices of Brent Collinson.and#8221; Great effort!

Congratulations also go to Truckeeand#8217;s Girls Volleyball AAA State Champions and all the other school teams, participants and supporters of fall sports throughout the Truckee/Tahoe area. Participation in athletics and other extra curricular activities do enhance the education and growth of individuals and their feeling of self esteem. The support of these teams by parents and locals alike enhance the experience and are a cause for community pride.

Community support and fundraisers for those in need over the holidays: Once again this year, I would like you to join us and many others in supporting the 15th and#8220;Truckee Community Christmasand#8221; drive to serve over 250 families, seniors and homebound citizens of our community. Please mail a check directly to Truckee Community Christmas, Inc., PO Box 2955, Truckee, CA 96160.

New this year is a community Thanksgiving Pot Luck Celebration and dinner at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach. The event is free to everyone whether you bring food to share or not. Call event organizer, Meera Beser, at 775-230-1066 or go to http://www.tahoecommunitythanksgivingcelebration/blogspot.com for more information. This sounds like a great start to a wonderful annual community event.

Bonus questions: With only one more question of the week (December 7) and two more and#8220;Mountain Timesand#8221; columns to go, I am adding a couple of bonus questions which were suggested by longtime area residents. Answering these questions will create bonus points for players for our 2011 year end drawing.

Compliments of Rick Sylvester: For many years a Tahoe Vista motel existed with a name that was and#8220;contrary to good Spanish grammar.and#8221; What was the name of the motel located 6631 North Lake Blvd. which is now the location of the and#8220;The Rustic Innand#8221;?

Compliments of Russell Rosewood: What was the name of the downtown Truckee business that posted its hours of operation as follows: and#8220;Open and#8216;til we close, Closed and#8216;til we open?and#8221;
