TRUCKEE/TAHOE, Calif. and#8212; Although this has been an extremely difficult winter for many, and too long for many others, it is exciting to see the rivers running deep and the lakes and reservoirs filling up. It has been a long time since we have seen this amount of run-off, and it was needed.

So far it has been an orderly run-off, with little or no flooding. There is still a tremendous amount of snow in the upper elevations. I imagine some high country hiking and biking trails will be impassable this year, but for those of you who are into boating, rafting and kayaking and#8230; these could be the best water recreation conditions in a long time.

Excellent effort: I just wish to thank once again Carol Chaplin of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority and Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association who co-chaired the Lake Tahoe Amgen Organizing Committee. Their effort, along with that of their committee members, organizers, local municipalities, businesses and hundreds of volunteers in securing stages 1 and 2 of the Amgen Tour of California, was an outstanding showing of cooperation and unity in the entire Lake Tahoe/Truckee area.
