My Turn: Vote ‘no’ on Measure F

Elizabeth HaleSpecial to the Sun

LAKE TAHOE andamp;#8212; Vote no on Measure F on June 5. Take the extra 2 percent Transient Occupancy Tax, (Hotel Tax charged to visitors,) away from the big resorts and developers who only further their own self-interests.The North Lake Tahoe Resort Association represents multi-million dollar corporations before local or non-resident property owners. High-salaried NLTRA Community Partnership and Planning Director Ron Treabess also officially represents Placer County, Tahoe Transportation District and the Tahoe City Public Utility District, which all support over-development.Our tax income is spent on very large salaries, consultants, and big projects; the Kings Beach Core Development Project, Town Center andamp;#8212; a financial black hole andamp;#8212; is to get TOT money now that redevelopment funds have faded away. And did you hear about the plan to build a hotel on the Tahoe City Golf Course? At its March 13 meeting, Placer County supervisors were given many letters saying thatandamp;#8217;s what locals want, even though 100 people at a TCPUD meeting on Feb. 7 were told it would remain a golf course.Very sadly, small lodges and restaurants close because they are not advertised by the NLTRA.At public meetings our comments are ignored in the end. Decisions have already been made. Weandamp;#8217;ve been ridiculed and insulted innumerable times over the last ten years when we stood to express our preferences. (Imagine the furor at school board meetings if our children were treated this way). A transit center was built over our Tahoe City park even though more than a thousand people went to Placer County Supervisorsandamp;#8217; meetings to protest. The situation seemed eternally hopeless. But we can vote to make a difference now. Our quality of life and environment count. Bigger is not better. Check out what monstrous development TRPA has in store for us in its Regional Plan Update. Tell the California Attorney General that you just canandamp;#8217;t take it. Attend monthly public Placer County Community Plan Update Workshops to see whoandamp;#8217;s blatantly controlling the public process and directing our future (not those who want to prioritize our natural, historic, pristine environment). Speak up. Tell the Resort Association and our Supervisors that the railroading is ridiculous. The Resort Association was founded in 1995 to be a link between Placer County and TRPA to get things done. Let them know soundly that weandamp;#8217;ve had enough of their mischief. Donandamp;#8217;t give multi-million dollar corporations extra money and power for 3,650 more days. Just vote NO on F on June 5th.Elizabeth Hale is a West Shore resident.
