Nevada County eliminates 32 positions so far in 2011

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. and#8212; Over the first two months of 2011, Nevada County officials have eliminated 32 positions, saving more than $1.4 million. Of those positions, 21 were filled and 11 were vacant.

“It has been very difficult to make these position eliminations as they have impacted a number of very dedicated county employees,” County CEO Rick Haffey wrote in an e-mail to The Union. “These mid-year budget mitigations are being made in an effort to overcome a greater number of layoffs at the end of June.”

Nine employees lost their jobs in the eliminations, said Gayle Satchwell, the county’s human resources director. Six full-time and one part-time employee retired; and five full-time employees and one part-time employee took other positions in the county.

Four of the layoffs occurred in February, Satchwell added.

“Although these position eliminations have made a significant impact to the budget gap, over $1.4 million, it is projected that, after a recommended appropriate use of reserves and the current concessions by a number of our bargaining units, there will still be another $1.4 million dollar gap to be solved,” Haffey wrote. “Our departments are now in the process of submitting their budgets for the 2011/12 fiscal year and we anticipate that there will be additional position eliminations identified as the budgetary process concludes in June.”
