Nevada County layoff figures expected later this week

NEVADA CITY, Calif. and#8212; Nevada County laid off an unspecified number of employees in February, Human Resources Director Gayle Satchwell confirmed Tuesday. More details on the layoffs are expected to be released later this week, Satchwell said.

It marks the second slate of layoffs this calendar year, as the county chopped 13.5 positions in late January.

A $5.5 million spending deficit is projected for the county in its upcoming fiscal year, which begins in July.

The layoffs come in the wake of a decision last month by Nevada County’s largest employee union, Local 39, to turn down a salary freeze.

Local 39 leaders turned down a wage freeze earlier that would have eliminated a 4 percent raise due to workers beginning in July. The county was not looking for significant cuts elsewhere, union leaders charged.

The move would have saved the county $1.7 million in salary and benefits in 2011-12, according to Joe Christoffel, deputy Nevada County CEO.

Local 39’s contract expires June 30, 2012, but the county wanted to come to the table with the union earlier to negotiate concessions to reduce its projected deficit, officials said.
