Nevada Senate OKs Reno fluoride bill

The Associated Press

CARSON CITY, Nev. ” The Senate Finance Committee has amended and sent to the full Senate a bill that would require the Truckee Meadows Water Authority to fluoridate water in the Reno area.

The amendment would require TMWA to start fluoridation but would put a question on the November 2010 ballot that would allow Washoe County voters to stop the fluoridation.

SB311 has been opposed by a cadre of conservative activists who are suspicious of government fluoridation programs. Dentists and other health care officials have supported the bill.

TMWA estimated it would cost about $5 million to start fluoridation and about $1.5 million a year to continue the program.
