On a bookshelf near the Truckee Library checkout desk is a small but select collection of new and notable books. Thanks to the Friends of Truckee Library, several new books are added to the collection each month. This means during each library visit, a reader is sure to find something of interest. The Friends provide funds for the collection with the intent Truckee readers will have access to new good reads without the wait usually associated with popular books. Books are selected to appeal to diverse interests and include fiction and non-fiction, mysteries, the latest hot biography, and political commentary. Consider checking out one of these titles to read on a snowy March evening.One of the hottest titles is The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. The title refers to a statistical term where a value falls outside the distribution pattern. In his latest book, the best-selling author describes people who have achieved phenomenal success the highest achievers as Outliers.Gladwell suggests what determines an Outlier is not their intelligence or natural ability but circumstances often outside their control, such as cultural background, family upbringing or just being lucky enough to be born at the right time, in the right place or in the right generation. According to Gladwell, Outliers such as Mozart, Bill Gates and the Beatles among others, had to work hard at developing their skills but were also able to use the circumstances provided to them to achieve incredible success.In his book Gladwell blends science and sociology with the skill to tell a good story and with The Outliers, he has written another fascinating and thought-provoking book.The Leisure Seeker by Michael Zadoorian. Many of us inspired by books like Steinbecks Travels with Charley or Kerouacs On the Road, dream of taking off, leaving the mundane behind in search of adventure. Our daydreams probably dont include making the trip with an 80-year-old driver who suffers from dementia and his pill-popping wife. This fast-paced thriller is the fourth Berry novel starring Cotton Malone and is the perfect novel for an afternoon of escape.Dewey: The Small-Town Cat who Touched the World. This true story starts in the dead of winter, in the very cold Midwestern town of Spencer, Iowa. It is told by the librarian who finds a bedraggled kitty in the bookdrop one morning and chronicles not only the story of Dewey but of the librarian who saves him and a Midwestern town that perseveres during good times and bad.Beat the Reaper, by Josh Basells. A thriller that mixes medicine and the mob. Expect action, suspense and violence in Josh Basells debut novel. It is sure to appeal to those who loved The Godfather and Wiseguy but it is not for the squeamish.Devil Bones by Kathy Reichs. The 11th Temperance Brennan mystery. Set in North Carolina, it mixes murder, forensic anthropology and wicca.There are dozens of books in the Friends collection; these are merely highlights. The books in this special collection cannot be put on reserve. Finding a book is easy putting it down once you start to read it may be difficult.
