Nine rescued after boat capsizes

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE ” Lake Tahoe Coast Guard personnel rescued nine people from the lake Saturday evening after a 21-foot rental pleasure craft capsized, according to a statement from the Coast Guard.

At 4:44 p.m., Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe received a call from a person reporting that his pleasure craft capsized, causing nine people to fall into the water. The station immediately launched a 25-foot safety boat, arriving on scene at 4:57 p.m. The safety-boat crew found the victims and retrieved them from the water, according to the statement.

The victims were found in good condition and were released upon reaching the shore.

The victims reported that 2- to 3-foot waves crashed onto the bow of their craft, causing it to capsize. Alcohol is not suspected as a contributing factor to the incident, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard reminds all members of the boating community to ensure they have all required and highly recommended safety equipment onboard and in serviceable condition before leaving the dock, including properly fitting, Coast Guard-approved life jackets for each person onboard, emergency position-indicating radio beacons, flares, and properly functioning radio and navigational equipment.
