NorCal man, 24, killed after truck drives off I-80

SODA SRPINGS, Calif. — A 24-year-old man died in a single-vehicle accident Monday morning on Interstate 80 west of Truckee, officials said.

Jose Natividad Baron Vazquez, of Placerville, Calif., was driving a 2004 Ford F-250 eastbound at 6:55 a.m. near the Donner Pass Road over crossing at Soda Springs when for unknown reasons the truck drifted right and off the interstate, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Ford traveled down a steep embankment and collided with several large boulders, according to CHP, before overturning and landing on its roof.

Vazquez was pinned in the truck and suffered fatal blunt force trauma injuries.

A 22-year-old passenger, Joel Pelayo Rios, also from Placerville, suffered a broken wrist, cuts and abrasions, but was able to free himself and climb up to the interstate, according to the highway patrol.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are considered to be contributing factors, officials said. Both men were wearing seat belts.

Anyone with information should contact the Truckee CHP branch at 530-582-7570.
