TRUCKEE, CA —The winter of 2022-23 was one for the record books, and all that snow helped make for a great ski season, filled our lakes, and brought about a great summer wildflower show. But also left Truckee Donner Land Trust with a little cleanup last summer. On Our Johnson Canyon property, the roughly double average snowfall left three foot bridges and one boardwalk crushed along the Donner Lake Rim Trail. But thanks to a grant from Northstar California supported by Vail EpicPromise, repairs were completed last fall.

“We are grateful to our long partnership with Northstar and the Vail EpicPromise program, and we appreciate their support in repairing damage on one of our most popular trails,” said John Svahn, Executive Director for the Land Trust.

After being evaluated by staff and engineers, contractors were able to get to work repairing the bridges and boardwalk over the course of about two months. Hikers, runners, and riders were still able to access the trail via an alternative route along a fire road in Johnson Canyon during the repairs.

Truckee Donner Land Trust is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and since starting in 1990, it has protected more than 40,000 acres of open space, and maintains more than 50 miles of trail.
