Obituaries: Crum, Van Vliet

Joan Crum died Dec. 19 as the result of an automobile accident near her home in Truckee. She leaves behind her husband Bill, son Richie, daughter Eileen, and so many friends and family. Joan was a volunteer for Hospice of Truckee and sang with the Mountain Belles. She loved the mountains of Truckee and the tropics of the Hawaiian Islands. She will be dearly missed. Van Vliet, Gladys KemnerGladys Van Vliet died on Dec. 5 in Auburn, Calif. at the age of 86. She was born in Schenectady, NY on Mar. 6, 1919 to George and Emily Thomson Kemner. The family moved to Southern California in 1934. Gladys worked building aircraft during World War II. In 1957 she moved to Truckee and owned Gateway Florist. In 1989 she moved to Auburn.Her husband, Paul Van Vliet, died on July 27, 2003. Her son Philip died on Aug. 15, 2004.Gladys is survived by her sister, Marion, in Pueblo, Colo.; son and daughter-in-law Gary and Jeannette Lewis of California City; three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.Services will be held on Dec. 29 at 11 a.m. at Chapel of the Hills in Auburn.
