Kathy Tavernier

February 28, 1955 to November 28, 2015

Kathleen Olsen Tavernier left us unexpectedly on November 28, 2015. Born February 28, 1955 to Burt and MaryAnn Olsen, Kathy grew up in Sacramento where she attended Rio Americano High School and graduated from the University of the Pacific with a degree in Psychology. While at UOP Kathy was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Upon graduating and after traveling abroad extensively, Kathy moved to Lake Tahoe. The Olsen family had spent their summers at the Lake while the children were growing, so settling there permanently was the obvious choice for this mountain girl. Very quickly Kathy became an active and productive member of the North Shore community. She worked with Ed Miller at the North Tahoe Fine Arts Council and contributed to the success of both the Music, and Shakespeare Festivals at Sand Harbor. Kathy served on the Board of Directors for the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society, worked for many years at Tahoe Tree as one of the original ‘Nursery Girls’, and joined the Tahoe Yacht Club judging wooden boats for the Concours d’Elegance. Of all Kathy’s countless lifetime accomplishments, however, she was most proud of co-founding the BEAR League with Ann Bryant and Linda Brown in 1998. She remained an active volunteer to the very end. Upon receiving her teaching credential, Kathy taught fifth and second grades for many years. Her students were cherished and right up until the day she left this earth, past students—now grown—would approach their beloved teacher, with hugs and words of endearment whenever they saw their “Mrs. T”. Kathy was married to Bruce Tavernier and together they enjoyed barbequing off the back deck most every evening all year long as well as boating, hiking, fishing, attending concerts, bird-watching, gardening, (at which Kathy excelled) and planning delightful classroom projects for Kathy’s students. Bruce passed away in 2008. It was rare to see Kathy without at least one of her golden retrievers by her side. Over the years she shared her home and love with many…Shiloh, Tally, Jordy, Blue, Willow and Archie. Archie (her last golden), passed away just five days after Kathy. They are surely all together and walking side by side once again. Kathy leaves behind her brothers Drew (Sue) and Alex (Heather) Olsen, sister Stephanie Cripe (Paul), beloved nephew and niece Paul (Elise) and Kristen, and cherished grand nieces Ellerie and Piper. A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at St. Nicolas Episcopal Church, Tahoe City at the outdoor chapel beginning at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the BEAR League (a 501[c]3 organization) in Kathy’s honor. For further information call 530-525-7297.
