Obituary: Alan ‘Al Tahoe’ Benelisha

Alan Benelisha passed away December 28, 2015 in the company of family. Alan is survived by his sister, a niece, two nephews and 8 great nieces and nephews.

Alan was born April 26, 1934 in San Francisco. He graduated from the UC Berkeley with a degree in Political Science in 1955 and was a member of Mensa. Alan loved to travel, particularly Alpine climates, making numerous trips to the Swiss Alps, Canadian Rockies and Alaska. Alan spent his career working for the DMV as a driver’s license examiner in the Los Gatos and Sacramento offices.

Alan retired from the DMV in 1988, and took up permanent residence in Tahoe at “Al’s Ski Hut”. For nearly 20 years Alan continued working – driving buses for Squaw Valley, OVI, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Granlibakken, and various Tahoe casinos. When not driving buses, he was often driving his own car up, down and around the Sierras. Later years were rough as he lost driving license but he managed by riding the bus and hitchhiking around the Tahoe area.

Alan’s family would like to thank to the Tahoe community for offering friendship, assistance, and care to Alan during his years at the lake. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any contributions honoring Alan be donated to the Tahoe Bear League ( This was a cause that Alan was very passionate about, and an organization that he was active in. As Alan would say “God Bless You.
