Obituary: Roxanne Millar Bickford
On November 11, 2014, Roxanne Millar Bickford, “Rockin Rox” passed away peacefully in Reno, NV after a courageous fight against cancer. Roxanne was born in Oakland, CA on February 26, 1951 and was raised in Piedmont, CA.
Roxanne lived in Honolulu in 1963 with her mother, Ardagh Marie, and brothers’ Blake and Edward. This began a lifelong love of Hawaii and she enjoyed many vacations to various islands with her family throughout her lifetime. Roxanne graduated from Piedmont High School and attended San Jose State University where she was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority.
After school, she spent 6 months travelling through Europe with friends and her future husband, John Bickford. They later settled in San Francisco where they both worked at Roos- Atkins on Market Street. They were married in Piedmont on May 24, 1975.
After enjoying many holiday weekends and vacations at Lake Tahoe, John and Roxanne moved to Tahoe City in 1974. Beginning in 1976, they owned and operated Bickford’s Village Sports until 2004. Believing North Lake Tahoe to be the ideal place to raise a family, their daughter, Ashly was born in 1980 and their son, Perry was born in 1983.

As a family they enjoyed all that Lake Tahoe has to offer from skiing in the winter to hiking and boating in the summer. They also enjoyed vacationing in La Jolla, The Alisal Ranch, and Rancho Mirage, CA. After selling their business in 2004, Roxanne and John spent 10 wonderful years living in Rancho Mirage, CA during the winter months and back in Tahoe during the summer months.
Roxanne was a fabulous hostess who loved to entertain. She enjoyed having her extended family and her numerous friends over for food, laughs, and libations. As a founding member of the “Wrecking Crew” and as one of the Original “Bunker Babes” Roxanne’s love of dancing, howling at the moon, and keeping the party going strong will be missed by all those who adored her.
She had a wonderful group of girlfriends whom she enjoyed countless luncheons and happy hours, often extending late into the evening. Roxanne also loved her morning cuddles with her granddaughter Scarlett and her sweet Jack Russell Terrier, Lizzie. She was especially looking forward to the future wedding of her son Perry to his fiancée Alexis Choi.
She leaves behind her loving husband John; her son Perry; her daughter Ashly Cope(Travis); granddaughters’ Scarlett and newborn Posie Cope; her mother Ardagh Marie Kistler; step father Harry Kistler; older brother Blake Millar(Ellen); younger brother Edward Millar (Sophia); mother-in- law Vivian Bickford; brother-in- law Mike Bickford(Becky), and many cousins, nieces, nephews, step brothers and step sisters. Roxanne is preceded in death by her father Victor Millar and father-in-law Cliff Bickford. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Roxanne’s name to the American Cancer Society or Wounded Warriors.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Sunnyside Resort in Lake Tahoe on January 24 at 12 pm.
