Richard Joseph Bambery, Sr.
October 9, 2014
April 3, 1934 – September 27, 2014
Passed on early Saturday morning, September 27, 2014, 80 years young at his home since January, Aegis of Corte Madera. He stood up heroically, calmly, and handsomely and like the rest of his life, lived his life to the fullest, in his fight to lung cancer for the past 9 months. He was surrounded by all those he loved and who loved him. His parents, John Harold and Lillie Bambery, and sister, Barbara A. Bambery, preceded him. Richard was born in Washington D.C. on April 3, 1934. The family moved to San Francisco, where Richard attended Balboa High School and joined the Navy Reserve, from 1953 – 1957. He received his Bachelors in Industrial Engineering from San Jose State University, his MBA from UC Santa Clara, then continued with Doctoral studies at the University of Michigan. His career included park worker in Yosemite, Executive at United Airlines, Restaurateur, Ski Instructor, and Professor of Computer Science. His favored occupation of all time was teaching. He taught himself and those around him even his very last days. He just did not want to stop learning. During his journey to find himself, he taught at multiple Colleges' across the country from 1971 – 1993. He shared his love of the outdoors with his children and family as well as his passion for music, guitars, photography, painting, juggling, jewelry making, sports and his beloved San Francisco Giants. From San Francisco to Lake Tahoe; Cocoa Beach to Park City, Richard touched our lives and made us who we are today. In 2004, Richard "Jaju" returned to the West Coast and moved to Sausalito for the birth of his grandson and yet another chapter of his fruitful life. He fell in love with his life on a floating home, embraced the community and Marin life, returned to his children and never missed his grandson's play or occasion. Richard leaves behind his wife and life love, Wanda Bambery, step daughter Ashley Willwerth, Travis Willwerth and step grandson Justin; beloved son, Richard J. Bambery, Jr. and daughter in law, Toni Bambery; Daughter Alison Bambery Regenold, son in law Todd G. Regenold, grandson Tristan Regenold; Christie Bambery and step sons Michael and Kerry Nierenberg; Dorothy Jeffries; extended family in Florida; and his neighbor for Life. The family is so very grateful for the guidance, support and encouragement of the tremendous caregivers at Aegis of Corte Madera, Hospice by the Bay and the team of doctors and their staff, Dr. Alex Metzger, Dr. Joseph Poen, Dr. Kabir Singh, Dr. Curtis Robinson and Dr. Nissam. Although cancer did not define him, you helped make this past year as good as it could ever be. Friends and Family are invited to funeral services on Saturday, November 15th at St. Hilary Church in Belvedere at 11:00 am, followed by a 1:00 pm Celebration of Life at Fernwood Cemetery at 301 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice by the Bay.
