Schuchmann,Gerald Herman

Gerald Herman Schuchmann of Tahoe Vista, CA passed away on September 19th, 2016. Herman was born December 2,1964 in San Francisco, CA,

His early childhood was spent in San Francisco with his family and they moved to San Jose where his parents owned Autreys bakery business. His parents Josef and Judith Schuchmann wanted to relocate to the mountains and purchased the Cedar Glen Lodge in Tahoe Vista. Herman graduated from North Lake Tahoe High School in 1983 and spent a year after high school working at the lodge with his siblings but also at other jobs around the lake. He decided to move back to the Bay Area to go to Junior College. Finding he wanted to return to Lake Tahoe, and pursue a cooking position he took a job working under Jean De Fau at La Playa Restaurant. He moved on to work at other reputable restaurants such as Captain Jon’s and La Petite Pier under Head Chef Gino Duggan as Sous Chef. He decided to enroll in the California Culinary Academy in1991 to enhance his already fine tuned cooking skills. His degree together with a passion for the industry and living in the mountains where he loved to mountain bike, ski and wakeboard in his free time brought him to work under Chef Lou Orlady at AJ’s Restaurante on the Lake at North Tahoe Marina. From there he went back to Captain Jon’s and took position as Head Chef until he and his partner Steve Marks decided to open Spindleshanks American Bistro and Wine Bar in 2001. Herman was married to Corinne Vance in 1995 and they had two children Hannah and Hans. Herman was bigger than life. His talent, passion, immense sense of humor, love of all and his infectious smile and laugh will never be forgotten. He was a man of honor and generosity and he would never hesitate for a moment to lend a hand to anyone, anytime and anywhere. He could put a smile on your face with his quirky loving comments and would love to drop by to see friends and colleagues as he was passing through, just even for a minute if that’s all he had time for. Herman enjoyed his own jokes more than anyone. He would laugh out so loud at the punchline that one could not help by laughing even if you didn’t get it. He really enjoyed golfing camping and fishing recently. He will be remembered fondly by his nickname which suited him so perfectly as ‘The Griswold”

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children Hannah 21 and Hans 18 and their mom Corinne, his sister Anna and family and his brothers Josef and Hans and families, his Uncle Gary Ryle and family and Father Jerry Ryle and his parents Josef and Judith Schuchmann, as well as his many friendships he gained in his years.
