Susan & Gary Beebe

Susan Lorene Beebe, age 77, of Oceanside, California, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Tri-City Medical Center in Vista, California. Susan was born on July 1, 1937, in New York City, the daughter of Ralph and Lorene (Hill) Read. She spent her pre-college years in Millburn, New Jersey, where her father was a minister. Susan attended Hood College in Maryland prior to transferring to the University of Michigan, where she was a religious and foreign affairs reporter for the Michigan Daily, as well as a reporter for the Michigan Journalist and a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Following graduation in 1959 with her B.A. major in Journalism and minor in English, she moved to California where she worked as Society Editor for the Lomita News and then Women’s Editor of the South Bay Daily Breeze until her marriage to Gary Scott Beebe in 1960, when she retired to become a full time mother to her four children. In the ensuing years, she taught Sunday school and volunteered her time with the pediatric wing of Harbor General Hospital and local Girl Scout and Indian Maiden troops. She earned an Elementary Teaching Credential in 1973 from California State University, Dominguez Hills and taught elementary school for 13 years before earning a certificate in Human Resources and working for Star Personnel. Following retirement, Susan and her husband moved to Lake Tahoe where she enjoyed skiing, sailing, painting, traveling, playing piano, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. After ten years, they relocated to Sandpoint, Idaho, where they thoroughly appreciated having horses and lots of open space on their 20 acre ranch. Susan and her husband relocated again to Oceanside, California to be closer to family, in 2012 where she devoted her days to faithfully and tirelessly taking care of Gary until his passing in 2014. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Oceanside. Susan is survived by her brother, James Read (Georgianna) of Sun City, Arizona and loving daughters Lore (Chris) Hines of Sparks, NV, Diana (Rolf) Baumgartner of Ventura, California, Heather (Eric) Corcoran of Oceanside, California, and devoted son, Murray (Carol) Beebe, of Lake Forest, California and grandchildren Joshua Atkinson, Megan Baumgartner, Derek Baumgartner, Michael Corcoran, and Savannah Beebe. She will be missed by so many who loved her. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband of 53 years, Gary, her parents, and grandchildren, Barry Atkinson and Christine Atkinson. A private celebration of her life, as well as Gary’s, will be held in March where their cremated remains will be scattered at sea. Gary Scott Beebe, of Oceanside, California, passed away peacefully on February 14, 2014, at home with family. He was 80 years old. Gary was born to Murray and Marion (Hawkes) Beebe in New Haven, Connecticut, on August 12, 1933. He moved to southern California with his family in his early years and was an airman in the United States Air Force Reserve from 1956 to 1962. He and Susan Lorene Read were married in 1960 and had four children. Gary had a highly successful 30 year career as an Engineer, most of it spent with Hughes Aircraft Company in Torrance, California. Following a well-earned retirement, he and Susan moved to Lake Tahoe, where he enjoyed skiing, sailing, traveling, camping, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and appreciating the great outdoors. Ten years later, they moved to Sandpoint Idaho, and he settled in to a very fulfilling life of caring for three horses and their 20 acre ranch, and growing his own fruits and vegetables. In 2012, he and Susan moved to Oceanside to be closer to family. His children and grandchildren were so fortunate to be able to spend extra time with him during his last couple of years. Gary is survived by his devoted son, Murray (Carol) Beebe of Lake Forest, California, and loving daughters Lore (Chris) Hines of Sparks, NV, Diana (Rolf) Baumgartner of Ventura, California, Heather (Eric) Corcoran of Oceanside, California, and grandchildren Joshua Atkinson, Megan Baumgartner, Derek Baumgartner, Michael Corcoran, and Savannah Beebe. He is greatly admired and missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandchildren, Barry Atkinson and Christine Atkinson. The love of his life, Susan Beebe, passed away less than a year after him on January 27, 2015. A private celebration of the lives of Gary and Susan will be held in the spring, where their cremated remains will be scattered at sea together. We will always carry the memories of Gary and Susan in our hearts.
