Obituary: Laura Horman

Long-time Donner Lake resident Laura (Bass) Horman passed away peacefully on July 10, 2011, at the age of 95. We will miss her.

Laura was born December 6, 1915, in Chicago, Illinois, and was the eldest of 3 children in an Army family. World War II found her in Santa Monica at the McDonnell Douglas aircraft factory. After moving to San Francisco, she volunteered at the USO where she met Danial Horman who was to be her husband for the next 60 years. They eloped to Reno News Yearand#8217;s Day 1947. On their trip they passed Donner Trading Post which they later bought and with the help of family ran the business until the early 70and#8217;s. The family also ran gift shops in Kings Beach, Crystal Bay and Bijou.

Laura was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, Officer in the Historical Society, Tinkerbell Garden Club and Rebekah Lodge #2.

Laura and Dan loved to play Duplicate Bridge and were regulars at the games in Truckee, Tahoe City and Reno. She was widowed in 2007, shortly after their 60th anniversary.

The family is especially grateful to the Tahoe Forest Hospital Extended Care Center staff for their loving care during Lauraand#8217;s 7 year residency there. We are also thankful for the Tahoe Forest Hospice staff for maintaining Lauraand#8217;s dignity and providing comfort at the end of her life.

Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Tahoe Forest Hospice, PO Box 759, Truckee, CA 96160.
