One of two town council seats in tight race

Whether Josh Susman maintains his 53-vote lead over Ron Florian in the Truckee Town Council race could depend on the estimated 4,700 absentee and provisional ballots cast across Nevada County that have yet to be counted, according to the Nevada County elections office. Nevada County Clerk Recorder Kathleen Smith said that the official election canvass will begin on Nov. 4, starting with the closest races, including Truckee’s town council contest. If the vote count stays close or narrows, the candidates have the right to ask for a hand recount of ballots, which they would pay for, said Smith. Of the estimated 4,700 votes left to be counted, approximately 3,700 are absentee ballots and the other 1,000 are provisional ballots, said Smith. The elections office did not know how many of those ballots were cast in Truckee compared with the rest of Nevada County.Unofficial results show that in the race for the two contested council seats, Barbara Green leads with 3,185 votes. Josh Susman stands at 2,921 votes with Ron Florian close behind at 2,868 votes.Susman said that he was enjoying his “momentary victory,” but realized that the contest with Florian was still up in the air.”It could still go either way,” said Susman. “Right now it’s anybody’s race with the absentees and the provisionals [still to be counted].” Richard Anderson was the only candidate for the two-year seat left vacant when Councilman Ted Owens opted for a spot on the Nevada County Board of Supervisors.
