‘Operation Sick Chicken’ set

" Sun staff reports

The Nevada County Public Health Department will conduct a countywide pandemic influenza field exercise next week.

In other words, the county will test its preparedness for a devastating outbreak of flu, which experts predict might occur in the event Bird Flu mutates to become a virus that transmits from human to human.

The exercise, called Operation Sick Chicken, is set for Jan 24 and is the result of months of meetings and infrastructure preparedness. The exercise will include the public health department, environmental health department, office of emergency services, local fire and law enforcement, hospitals, community clinics and volunteer agencies.

For more information, call Holly Whittaker, epidemiologist at (530) 219-0909.
