25th Annual Turkey Bowl: Families to unite in Truckee for annual game
November 23, 2010
TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; The traditional turkey isnand#8217;t the only thing stuffed and stitched in Truckee Thanksgiving morning. The Annual Turkey Bowl is also stuffed with loads of camaraderie and perhaps a stitch-or-two and#8212; courtesy of Jim Ritchie, DDS. Game time: 10:30 a.m. at Alder Creek Middle School.
Andy Kiser, before carving his familyand#8217;s 1985 Thanksgiving turkey, called a number of Truckee families and invited teams of local youths and their dads to a friendly game of flag football (or not, depending on whose team was about to score the winning point). The band of merry-men, moms and an occasional little sister headed out to Regional Park from 1985 to 1995 but moved to Alder Creek School sometime after its 10-year reunion.
Throughout the years, teams are drafted from the Archer, Babb, Brooke, Cross, DeMont, Detwiler, Gallaher, Greene, Hall, Hernandez, Hovorka, Jacobs, Kiser, Krone, Lawrence, Ratzlaff, Reinstein, Ritchie, Sheltren, Snyder and Grandpa Dale, Specht and Wallace families in Truckee.
Although some families have moved from the Truckee-Tahoe basin, everyone tries to return each fall with 4×4 loads of hot chocolate or coffee, lawn chairs, flag-football socks, digital cameras and the next generation of children (from mentioned families). Half-time photos are usually snapped by Debbie Babb, the playerand#8217;s un-official sports photographer, and cheered on by side-lined moms, family, long-time (30 plus years) friends and neighbors.
