A Victory for Olympic Legends Gala

Olympians at the Olympic Legends Gala gathered in front of the stage.

The percentage of Olympians living in our small community is extremely high. And the Who’s Who of those local Olympians with Olympians from the 1960 Olympic games in Squaw Valley were gathered under one roof Jan 16 for the Olympic Legends Gala, an elegant evening culminating a 10-day celebration of our area’s Olympic heritage.

The evening also served as a fundraiser for the Squaw Valley Ski Museum Foundation to support the dream of a world class museum celebrating the history and future of winter sports in the Sierra Nevada.

A silent auction, featuring memorabilia from the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley, greeted guests in the Resort at Squaw Creek’s jam-packed foyer. More than 500 guests maxed out the ballroom with tables placed in every conceivable space.

There, a film commemorating the and#8220;Snow Ball’s Chanceand#8221; effort by Alex Cushing to win the bid for the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley was shown, with Olympic footage and testimonials from Olympians and participants.

A family-style dinner was served atop printed tablecloths, fashioned from vintage 1960 Olympics Life Magazine photos. A gold medal baked Alaska topped off dinner before dancing began to The New Indifference band, featuring Frank Carabetta singing the great old standards. Kudos to Gillian Ronaldi Poulsen and husband Russell who worked tirelessly chairing the premier event.

Among those celebrating our local Olympic spirit were Rob Weston and Sally Taylor, Lauren and Ron Parson, Becky and Squaw Valley Ski Corp board director (and Alex Cushing’s grandson) Alex Kuncynzski, Judge Bill Newsom and Hillary Newsom-Callan, Liz Dugan, Sue and Rich Stout, Fritzi and Bill Briner, Merritt Cutten, Sally and Dave Gardner, Roxie and Olympian Bob Ormsby, Johanna and Sal Monforte, Sheri and Chris Thibaut, Cathy and Skylo Dangler, Hans Standteiner Sr., Kerry and Sugarbowl GM Rob Kautz, Linda and Alpine Meadows and Homewood GM Hoopie Hoopingarner, Kathrin and Olympian Bill Hudson, Christy, Tiana, Bud and Olympian Greg Jones, Linda and Ernst Hager, Robert Frohlich, Carolyn Wallace Dee, Nancy Cushing, Sue and Sam Harrosh, Carol and Jon Shanser, Debbie Dutton, Betty Walsh, Olympians Tamara McKinney and Kristin Krone, Carole Praxmarer, Olympic Heritage Week exec producer Linda Williams, Ann and Roger Beck of the Resort at Squaw Creek, Kirsten and Mike Livak, Sasha and Tom Murphy, Christine Horvath, Nancy Cunningham and Wes Schimmelpfennig, Olympians Eric and Sandra Poulsen, Wayne and#8220;Pouleyand#8221; Poulsen Jr., Jim Fetzer, Eleanor, Harley and John Chapman of Porter’s Sports, Sue Bennett, and#8220;A Snow Ball’s Chanceand#8221; author Dave Antonucci, Pam and Mitch Pavel, Eddy and Olympian Osvaldo Ancinas, Olympian Starr Walton, Kristin and Jeff Moseley, Babette Haueisen (she’s celebrating her 80th this week), and Para Olympian Mark Wellman.
