Across the Universe: The return of SierraSun.com, offering more in print

TAHOE-TRUCKEE, Calif. — Last week, the Sierra Sun officially entered its 146th year of existence — the Wednesday, June 10, print edition was the first in Volume No. 146, a pretty remarkable feat.
The Sun debuted as the Truckee Tribune way back in 1869. Obviously, a lot has changed since the Civil War era, and when fast forwarding to the last decade or so, we've endured several changes — from new website designs to smaller-sized print editions and varying publication days to adjustments to how we actually cover the news.
Today, I'm excited to discuss a pair of changes that we've made due to direct feedback from readers and advertising clients, all in an effort to better adjust to your wants and desires.
ON THE WEB…
First, SierraSun.com is back — it officially re-launched at 1 p.m. Monday.
More than two years ago, we chose to house our content (along with that of the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza) on one regional website, under the banner of our sister paper on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe, the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

Since, we've vastly outgrown the consolidated structure, so we're bringing back the Sun's website in order to expand on our digital opportunities to better meet needs of the locals, second-home owners and visitors who rely on web coverage to stay up to date on the news, events and other fun goings-on that are unique to Truckee and the North Shore.
Here are a few highlights:
• Our website structure and layout is similar, but now instead of seeing South Shore content, you'll find stories that are germane to the Sun and Bonanza coverage areas.
• All the Bonanza's content each week will continue to publish on SierraSun.com.
• We have 16 landing pages of content (we well as weather, calendar and announcements tabs), and we've added several key categories such as environment, music, real estate, the arts, and health & wellness to ensure we're covering every angle online.
• We've added Twitter and Facebook feeds directly to the front section of the website to draw more awareness to our social media coverage.
• At the same time, helpful links to the e-editions of the Sun, Bonanza and Tahoe Magazine remain on the new site for easy access.
With the re-launch of SierraSun.com, we're able to focus on offering more content through an easier-to-access-and-navigate medium for our diverse audiences.
… AND IN PRINT
As you leaf through Wednesday's paper, you'll notice it will be thicker, and with more content areas, in that the health and community sections normally reserved for Fridays also are included.
That's because, much like the digital move with SierraSun.com to offer more areas of content, we have a lot more to offer in print.
Beginning this week, your new-look Wednesday Sierra Sun will include several more stories and photos, with a focus on local news and sports, business, health, education and community news, as well as regional news of interest.
Friday's edition, meanwhile, will increase in size as well, and it will also have a new look, in more ways than one.
First, while we'll continue to publish informative local news stories, we'll also be embracing the many fun things this region has to offer. With that, you can expect to see a larger focus in Friday's edition on outdoor recreation, entertainment and dining, among other areas.
We live in the biggest and best playground in America, and we're going to make sure that's abundantly clear in every weekend edition we produce, moving forward.
With that comes a new look for the Tahoe World. For that past several years, the World has focused solely on recreation, entertainment and dining. Now the World, while remaining an insert inside the Friday Sun, will revert back to its more traditional model of including local news, crime logs and opinions.
The key thing to remember is this: While the print editions may look different, not only will they include the same areas of information, but we'll also be publishing a whole lot more.
Change can be tough to embrace, but we're confident these digital and print changes are vast improvements meant to provide locals and visitors with more information they can't find anywhere else.
