Barbara Smith: McClintock has chosen wrong team
March 9, 2018
Are you on my team? The White House isn't an athletic event or a corporate environment. This is not a question the president of United States should ask a senior official of the Department of Justice.
That this president felt emboldened to ask this question is a clear indicator of his combativeness; his need to have those surrounding him pledge their personal loyalty; and his idea that government agencies function as his personal weapons to insulate and protect him from any perceived threat. It fits within his pattern of behavior of placing himself above the law and reeks of a guilty party actively working to hide misdeeds.
This president seems to forget or misunderstands that he and all government officials represent the same team. All take an oath to uphold the Constitution. That oath is not to one person or one family, and it requires all who take it to subordinate their own personal interests or political party affiliation to the needs and interests of the people of the United States.
As a member of Congress, Tom McClintock also takes an oath to uphold the Constitution. He, however, has actively chosen to ignore, dismiss, or distort verifiable facts in the interest of propping up a president and an administration engaging in an assault on our own Department of Justice, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies. His refusal to uphold that oath disqualifies him to represent the constituents of Congressional District 4.
If he had military service, McClintock might have learned this jewel of guidance from the West Point Cadet prayer: "Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong." He has chosen the path of obstruction, lies, and corruption. He has consistently chosen the easier wrong. He has chosen the wrong team.
