Boys and Girls Club clean up Donner Rim Trail
October 26, 2005
A group of boys and girls helped clean up Negro Canyon last Wednesday, and in the process learned a little about the habitat and ecology of the area surrounding the Donner Rim Trail. The Truckee Donner Land Trust teamed up with the Boys and Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe to lead a group of 11- to 13-year-olds in cleaning up the base of Negro Canyon, just west of Truckee, which serves as the main trailhead access to the Donner Rim Trail. The trail, which currently runs from Tahoe Donner east to Summit Lake, is being built by the land trust to circle the Donner Lake basin.
The young crew picked up 15 large bags of trash, and took an educational walk through the canyon to learn about the plants and animals that call the slopes their home.Lee Litvin, who headed up the group from the Boys and Girls Club, said the kids were happy to get outside and see something outside of Kings Beach, where the nonprofit club is located.”They loved it,” Litvin said. “We try to get the kids outside as much as possible.”For the land trust, the event was an opportunity to showcase its trail project to a group of younger-than-normal volunteers, and to clean up the base of the canyon that often becomes littered with trash because of its proximity to Interstate 80.
“We were really excited to have a group of younger kids,” said Sara Taddo, land conservation director for the Truckee Donner Land Trust. The land trust was happy to have the enthusiastic help of the 10 boys and girls, said Taddo.”They were actually really fired up,” Taddo said.A fun hike along the Donner Lake Rim Trail followed the trash pick up project with Truckee Donner Land Trust staff members Susan Sheffield and Sara Taddo. The staff engaged the kids in some environmental education topics, such as responsible trail building techniques for minimizing erosion, animal habitat sightings and discussion, and how watersheds work to provide water for humans and animals.
The day was such a success that the two groups hope to work on future volunteer day projects together in the future.”Teens are always welcome to volunteer for trail building on the Donner Lake Rim Trail, and can also inquire about becoming a Trail Crew Leader through the Truckee Donner Land Trust,” said Taddo in a written statement.Litvin said the Boys and Girls club is already expecting to hold a second event on the rim trail. “We’d like to do it next year,” said Litvin.
