Bryan DeVoe: If you see a campaign violation, have it investigated
January 13, 2019
Two elections ago during the campaign for the airport board there were two incumbents running for re election, the airport published their quarterly newspaper with pictures and glowing info of those two incumbent candidates.
This was about the same time the City of Roseville was fined by the California Fair Political Practices Commission for doing the same thing but on a bigger scale.
I went online to the fppc.ca.gov site and downloaded their "concern" page, filled out the form and with my "proof" I mailed it in. The Commission contacted me to let me know they would investigate and get back to me. They did and found the Airport District had violated the Act, though not a major violation, they "schooled" the District. Mary Hetherington on the board at that time, called me and thanked me for bringing this to their attention!
Now if Mr. Ward of Tahoe City (Sierra Sun letters, Dec. 14) really believes that a violation of campaign ethics has occurred in the recent Airport Board election, I suggest he use the CFPPC or the Placer County Grand Jury to investigate his allegations printed in the Sierra Sun. But, before you do, let's look at what you said.
... when did it become the “Truckee Way” for candidates to have a campaign chest of close to $60,000? Is that what it takes to get elected in this town now?

On the timing of Ms. Wallace's statement, a majority of ballots were mail in this election, most marked and mailed before the release of Ms. Wallace's statement. With the two incumbents running as a "package," if the election was "tainted," you would think that the results would have been their ending up either one and two, or two and three, but they didn't. It was one and three. The only possible conclusion can be that Ms. Hetherington was wanted on the board by the voters more than finisher number three!
As for former Truckee Mayor Alicia Barr's statement, when did it become the "Truckee Way" for candidates to have a campaign chest of close to $60,000? Is that what it takes to get elected in this town now? With almost $15,000 coming from one benefactor?
Those two incumbent candidates wallpapered our town with campaign posters. I counted over 30 posters on Glenshire Drive, from the Glenshire Bridge to the east end of the Legacy Trail, that is a distance of about a quarter of a mile.
I can remember only seeing about a half dozen signs for Mary Hetherington in our entire community, and I'll bet she used her own money.
