Cottonwood assists ‘Flying Doctors’ with ornament sales
December 5, 2011
TRUCKEE, Calif. – A spectacular Christmas tree, adorned with beautiful blown glass and hand painted ornaments, greets customers as they enter the cozy Fireplace Room at Cottonwood Restaurant on the hill above Truckee. Whimsical and colorful, the ornaments feature frogs, armadillos, lady bugs, dogs and cats as well as religious images of a cross and a beautifully painted Virgin Mary. Themed “Oaxacan Village,” the tree was decorated by Truckee’s Natalie Nelson, who also designs the ornaments and imports them via her company Nelson Trade and Design Group.
While Natalie has generously donated her time and provided ornaments for the Cottonwood tree for the past three seasons, her efforts this year will also provide needed funds for “Los Medicos Voladores” or “The Flying Doctors” (www.flyingdocs.org). Each of the ornaments are for sale at Cottonwood and all proceeds will go directly to the Flying Doctors to support them in their mission to fly health professionals to remote regions of Baja and Sonora Mexico and Southern California.
Natalie provided a similar tree to the Martis Camp Lodge last year. Called “Castle Peak Wildflowers,” the ornament sale from the 2010 tree allowed the Flying Doctors to purchase a number of “Doc in a Box” kits. These kits provide a village or pueblo the essential heavy equipment (sterilization units, hand instruments, dental chairs and generators) necessary for dentists and other medical professionals to provide assistance to the population. Having this equipment already on site allows the planes to fly lighter and bring more personnel and consumable medical supplies subsequent trips.
“We are so tickled to have this beautiful tree at Cottonwood,” said owner Mike Blide. “It will turn any hardened Grinch into a believer, and we are thrilled to participate in raising funds for such a great cause. If you are stumped for Christmas present ideas, this is a fantastic feel-good solution.”
Ornament prices range from $15-$35 and are available for purchase at Cottonwood daily after 4 p.m. Call the Cottonwood at 530-587-5711; The Flying Doctors, Patty Kelley at 530-587-6353 or Nelson Trade and Design Group, Natalie Nelson at 530-587-2964.
