Counseling center finds new identity
July 15, 2003
After nearly 10 years of explaining to people that they’re not a restaurant, the people at TGIF (Truckee Group Individual and Family Counseling) decided it was time for a name change.
On July 1, they started calling themselves Wellspring Counseling Center, a name that does a much better job of explaining what the agency is all about, said Executive Director Jennifer Cannell.
“We felt [the name TGIF] was silly. Nobody really knew what it meant,” Cannell said.
The staff and board of directors of the non-profit agency chose the name after sifting through others like Gateway, Horizon and Community Counseling.
The name Wellspring, she said, “adds meaning to what we do. It means inner-knowledge. A spring comes from deep.”
Connie Lentz, the office manager at Wellspring, said the new name may help direct people to their services.

“[Wellspring] is what people are looking for when they come to counseling,” Lentz said.
With the name change comes a new mission statement: to provide quality, affordable counseling and educational services that touch lives, empower people and strengthen community.
As always, the staff at Wellspring will continue to offer their services to people who don’t qualify for county health or those who are underinsured or uninsured.
In January 2004, the group will celebrate their 10th anniversary of providing such services, and Wellspring has come a long way since its inception.
“In the last year, especially, we’ve really grown,” Cannell said. “It’s been a really big year.”
Recently, Wellspring added a program manager and a bilingual counselor, Tanya Rentz, to its staff. Cannell is currently recruiting a third master’s-level intern. They’re also looking for an additional board member.
In the last few months, Wellspring staff has tried to expand their services to the Tahoe community through monthly focus groups as well, Lentz said.
“If they know we’re here (for community focus groups), then they can come back when they might need the help.”
