Special to the Sun

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; The North Lake Tahoe-Truckee Leadership Program is now accepting applications for the 2012 program, although only a few remain. The original deadline for application submission has been extended two weeks, to Friday, Dec. 30.

The program creates an opportunity for potential leaders to broaden their understanding of the region and its issues, challenges and opportunities, while developing and honing their leadership skills.

Since 2004, the program has graduated more than 175 individuals. These alumni are now serving their employers and the community in active community-building efforts.

The workshops will be led by Shannon Beets, vice president for Institutional Effectiveness and Compliance and Associate Provost at Sierra Nevada College in Incline Village. Each workshop is integrated with half of the time spent on regional issues such as special districts, planning and nonprofit advocacy; and the other half on leadership skill development such as collaboration, team basics and negotiation. The program begins Jan. 26 at Sierra Nevada College.

Businesses can support the program and show their commitment to the community by sending an employee to participate in the program. Businesses can also help support the program with a one-day sponsorship for $500. Businesses and organizations are also invited to submit suggestions for the class projects.

The program participants will create Action Plans designed to improve or enhance some aspect of local community life. Action plan topics must be able to be used within one year and have a positive impact on the community.
