When will feds ‘get their act together’ on forest management?

President Trump recently tweeted that he is ordering FEMA to cut off aid to California’s wildfire victims until California “gets its act together” on forest management.

Apparently, the president needs to be reminded that 57 percent of the forests in this state are owned and managed by various federal agencies. Is he also going to cut off aid to those agencies until they “get their act together” on forest management? This kind of grandstanding at the expense of California’s wildfire victims is not becoming to the office of the President.

We know that management practices need to improve if we want to achieve safer, sustainable forests. However, we also know that global warming, caused mainly by carbon emissions, is a major factor in our increasing wildfire danger.

Rep. Tom McClintock (CA-4) prides himself on his concern for the millions of acres of forest land in his district. I urge him to engage with the president on improving forest management practices on Federal lands and providing the funding to do so.

I also urge him to support the bipartisan Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R. 7173, S. 3791) recently introduced into both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The Act would place a gradually increasing fee on carbon pollution caused by fossil fuels, and return all the revenue from the fee to American households as a monthly carbon dividend.

This market-based, simple, comprehensive climate solution would not only dramatically reduce carbon pollution by 40 percent in 12 years, it would grow the economy and create jobs. It is effective, good for people, good for the economy, revenue neutral, and supported by both Republicans and Democrats.
