Donner Summit to celebrate the end of winter with Independence Day festivities

Special to the Sun

SODA SPRINGS, Calif. andamp;#8212; Heavy spring snow, propane explosions and evacuations have made the 2010/2011 winter a long one for people in Donner Summit communities. The end of the winter calls for celebration, and Donner Summit will be doing just that over the Independence Day weekend. DSAA is proud to present the Annual Community Picnic on Saturday, July 2, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Sugar Bowlandamp;#8217;s Mt. Judah Lodge. The picnic includes a barbecue lunch, games and a bounce house. The fun will be accompanied by live music from the Mountain Belles and the rock and roll trio Jo Mama. Auction and raffle prizes are donated by local businesses and DSAA members, including a cash prize, ski passes, gift certificates from local restaurants, local artwork, firewood, themed gift baskets and more. DSAA will also announce the Community Person of the Year. Funds raised at this event support DSAAandamp;#8217;s work to inform about issues affecting the bi-county area and to bring a voice to the concerns of the community. The Serene Lakes Property Owners Association (SLPOA) will also host its annual 4th of July party on Sunday, July 3. Activities at Lot 1 (SLPOAandamp;#8217;s leased beach area) will include the annual 4th of July parade, a flea market, chili cook off and barbecue and, if the lake has cleared, sailboat races. Visit http://www.SLPOA.com for more information. Sugar Bowlandamp;#8217;s 2010/11 and 2011/12 passholders will have the rare opportunity to ski Sugar Bowl and enjoy a holiday barbecue on Monday, July 4 when they open the Disney Chair. Finally, the Truckee Donner Recreation andamp; Park District will hold its annual fireworks display on Monday, July 4. Donner Summit offers a unique view of the display from above.andamp;#8212; Submitted to aedgett@sierrasun.com
