Donors made ‘Gits for Good’ happen

I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver.

Gifts for Good – the collaborative effort between Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation, the Sierra Sun and Tahoe World – is about giving. It’s about giving locally and seeing the benefit through action of local organizations. We’re very proud to announce that the collaboration received 109 gifts from local residents this year. Gifts ranging in size from $10 to $10,000 were made to the Gifts for Good fund.

The campaign, to date, has raised a total of $74,442.22; that’s approximately $20,000 more than last year. Various sized gifts from various donors – what a fabulous thing. This gift giving project is designed so that every donation makes a difference. Large or small, every cent is returned to the local community through use by nonprofit and service groups. The donations are a true tribute to the giving hearts and souls of this community.

Gifts for Good, in its second year, is an effort aimed at raising dollars to be used locally by nonprofit and service groups. Donors can make contributions to Gifts for Good and tag them to a specific use, such as the environment, children, education or art, or they can donate them to general use within the Gifts for Good fund. The funds are accessed by area groups through a grant process. A variety of groups took advantage of the 2002 grant funds. Truckee River Watershed Council, Kings Beach Family Connection, the Workforce Housing Association of Truckee Tahoe and Truckee Community Christmas are among those that benefited from the giving spirit of those contributing dollars through this campaign.

In addition to the fund-raising effort of the Truckee Tahoe Community Foundation mailings, e-mail lists and countertop envelopes, the newspapers serve the Gifts for Good program by helping get the word out. Donation forms are included in every issue published during the holiday season. In addition, the papers featured stories about seven of the groups that benefited from the funds raised last year. By telling the stories of the groups that benefit from the donated dollars, we hope to connect donors to the community, highlight the good work that is being done by the organizations and recognize the efforts of both donors and grant recipients.
