June 13, 2011
TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; Pencil it into your planner and remind local friends: Itandamp;#8217;s time to get your Downtown Truckee Thursdays groove on beginning June 16, continuing through Aug. 25, 5-9 p.m. andamp;#8220;Downtown Truckee Thursdays is just what the doctor ordered to shake those winter blues and embrace another great Truckee summer,andamp;#8221; said event organizer Andy Mond, adding the event is one week longer this year. Each week features a nonprofit partner and free parking starting at 5 p.m.Watch for local Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada, the June 16 nonprofit partner, who plan to empty out their cookie closet by cruising the crowd and handing out free cookies. Some of the scouts will be dressed in festive cookie costumes and literally hundreds of delicious Girl Scout cookies will be passed out to attendees. Now in its fourth year, Truckee Thursdays is a feel-good event that beckons the community to enjoy exuberant downtown summertime energy with childrenandamp;#8217;s activities, live music, art, the Foothills Farmers Market, a beer garden and vendors of all ilk.Mond says the first week of the series will feature added attractions including Truckeeandamp;#8217;s own Donner Party 2.0, a finalist in the Red Bull Creation Challenge, displaying their fire-breathing grandfather clock invention. As part of their contest entry, the team described themselves as andamp;#8220;a ragtag group of skiers, metal artists, photographers, computer programmers, and enginerds from Lake Tahoe who like to tame fire and electricity and warp them with our hands into thought provoking and awe inspiring works of participatory art!andamp;#8221;Also new this year is Downtown Truckee Thursdays T-shirt design contest. Popular local artist Sara Zimmerman provided a fanciful rendition of the event which will grace 2011 logo garb. Zimmermanandamp;#8217;s design will be printed on event T-shirts which will be on sale throughout the summer at the Info Tent inside the beer garden. andamp;#8220;Bring your appetite, your dancing shoes and your giving spirit,andamp;#8221; said Mond.Nonprofit partner KidZone Museum will offer child-friendly activities including a bounce house, arts and crafts and more.Last year the event garnered more than 10,000 attendees and organizers expect a significant increase. The summer-long eventandamp;#8217;s top sponsors include DBI/Coors as the beer garden sponsor, Squaw Valley USA as the main stage sponsor, Alpine Meadows/Homewood as the kidsandamp;#8217; area sponsor, HP Small Business Solutions and Lake Tahoe Online.
