Downtown Truckee Thursdays offers fun for four-legged friends

TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; Downtown Truckee Thursdays is going to the dogs on Aug. 5 when the popular weekly summer event pays tribute to furry friends with a pet costume contest and parade.
The weekand#8217;s event is presented by the Donner Truckee Veterinary Hospital with non-profit partner the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe. Costumed pets and their owners are asked to check in at the main Snowbomb event tent adjacent to the Truckee train depot at 5 p.m. Parade and judging will begin at 5:30 p.m. Scraps Dog Bakery will provide wonderful prizes to the top three best dressed canines.
and#8220;We encourage folks to grab their pets and come on down and join in the fun,and#8221; said Andy Mond, Truckee Thursdayand#8217;s event manager.
To continue the animal theme, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe is raffling off a specialized road or mountain bike to one lucky winner worth more than $3,000. The winner will choose between a 2010 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert or a 2010 Specialized Roubaix Expert Compact bike from Pacoand#8217;s Truckee Bike and Ski. The winning ticket will be drawn at 8 p.m. at the Truckee Thursday main stage, you need not be present to win. Raffle tickets are $20 each or six for $100, tickets are limited so chances of winning are good. To purchase tickets call the Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee at 587-5948 or stop by one of the following locations: Elijah Bleuand#8217;s House of Coffee, Lakeside Pizza, Pacoand#8217;s Truckee Bike and Ski, Tahoe Daveand#8217;s Ski Shop or Wild Cherries Coffee.
Downtown Truckee Thursdays 2010 continues through Aug. 19, 5-9 p.m. The 10-week series was launched three years ago by the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association in an effort to highlight and revitalize the town and underscore a and#8216;Think Localand#8217; attitude. In addition to childrenand#8217;s activities, Truckee Thursdays also offers live music, art, the Foothills Farmers Market, a beer garden, catering and and#8220;foodieand#8221; trucks and vendors. Additionally, many of the local merchants showcase special wares on the sidewalk outside of their stores.
The summer-long event is funded by the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association, the Town of Truckee, DBI Beverage and through sponsorships and participating vendor fees. This yearand#8217;s media sponsors include Suddenlink Communications, The Weekly, Moonshine Ink, Sierra Sun, Tahoe TV and 101.5, Truckee-Tahoeand#8217;s Local Independent Radio Station.
