CHEERS: To the proposal for new high school sports league made up of mostly Lake Tahoe League schools by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Realignment Committee on Tuesday. Not only would this encourage more time in the classroom, but it would also decrease the cost for local schools to travel for their current league games and#8212; not to mention, this move would set up spirited rivalries to be the best at Lake Tahoe. (See today’s Sports section for the story).

JEERS: To the lose-lose situation our local libraries are trying to repair. In Nevada County, some officials want to outsource staffing of the libraries, while a committee this week recommended the county bail itself out to retain the level of service they currently provide. While bail-outs have proven to be short-term solutions, we know this would not solve the long-term issue every government is facing and#8212; a smaller general fund that cannot sustain our current level of services. This game of tug-of-war between departments will only increase in the long run unless sustainable, long-term funding mechanisms are delivered during this process.

CHEERS: To the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., whose nonviolent struggle for equal rights continues nearly a half-century after his death. In a time when civil rights of gays and lesbians are being prevented by political and religious groups, and legal immigrants are fighting for equal wages and benefits, the nonviolent ethic continues to prevail as the best way to organize civil disobedience. Whatever you believe regarding those sensitive issues, keeping our discussions peaceful and productive are the best examples we can set for our children and the rest of the world, and because of that, we take time to remember Dr. King every year.
