CHEERS: To the 1,000 community members who have now signed the Speak Your Peace pledge. The campaign, led by the Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, highlighted a need in our area for better civil discourse, and promoted things like listening and avoiding gossip. We know not everyone feels this is important, or agrees that it is needed, and that is just fine. The point was to show the volume of people who feel they can improve their own lives by working harder than ever at peaceful, constructive communication on important local issues. Now, the hard part: Keeping the momentum so we really can show success in the long term.

JEERS: To those who steal bear crossing signs for their own home decorations. We understand the appeal of having authentic bear signs, but it does cost our local community to replace them. If you want those signs, we encourage you to make your own, or contact Caltrans to see if they have old signs for purchase.

CHEERS: To getting our young community members involved with the local arts scene. Kids Art Saturdays at North Tahoe Arts invites kids to work with an artist on some kind of art project for a couple hours at North Tahoe Arts. Saturday, from noon to 2 p.m., kids will work with local artist Cornelia Kallerud to decorate cinnamon Christmas ornaments for their tree or to give as gifts. No charge. No reservations. No excuses.
