Friends of the Truckee Library | Who we are in Truckee

Teri Andrews RinneSpecial to the Sun

TRUCKEE, Calif. andamp;#8212; If one casually scans the magazine rack at the Truckee Library, as I did recently, you might get a snapshot of who we are as a community in terms of interests and avocations. Two genres of magazines dominate our collection: Outdoor activities and popular intellectual interests. Alas, there is only one fashion magazine. Now I understand why I happily landed here 13 years ago, without ever looking back! For the outdoor enthusiast, the Truckee Library subscribes to Backpacker, Bicycling, Cross Country Skier, California Fly Fisher, Mountain Bike Action, Outdoor Life, Outside, Rock and Ice, Runners World, Ride BMX, Ski and Transworld Snowboarding.Once the sun goes down and weandamp;#8217;ve finished playing outside, itandamp;#8217;s the perfect time to feed the mind, with selections such as Air andamp; Space, American Artist, American Heritage, Audubon, Discover, National Geographic, Popular Science, Scientific American, Smithsonian and Wired. We like to design, build and remodel homes and then decorate them with titles such as Architectural Digest, Fine Homebuilding, Fine Woodworking, Kitchen andamp; Bath Design News, House Beautiful, Victoria and Martha Stewart Living. We cook in our homes with Bon Appetit, Cookandamp;#8217;s Illustrated and Cooking Light. We also like to create art with titles such as Watercolor, Paper Crafts, The Writer and Popular Photography. Despite living in one of the most beautiful places on earth, we still like to travel, using National Geographic Traveler and Budget Travel. And despite our woefully short growing season, we also like to garden or at least like the idea of gardening, as evidenced by the popularity of titles such as Fine Gardening and Organic Gardening and Mother Earth News. Of course we also stock everything from the Economist to MAD magazine, and if you insist upon keeping up with current events and/or the Kardashians, Time, Newsweek, the New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, Rolling Stone and People will keep you in the know. So if you are looking for one of the easier ways to trim your discretionary spending budget, you can cancel the magazine subscriptions that are also held by the library. While the latest issue does not circulate, all past issues check out for three weeks. But if you are anything like me, just keep in mind that if the libraryandamp;#8217;s copies of magazines regularly end up in your recycling pile, your cost savings could be curtailed considerably in pesky replacement fees. The Truckee Library is located at 10031 Levon Ave., Truckee. Call 530-582-7846, or visit http://www.mynevadacounty.com/library.andamp;#8212; Submitted to aedgett@sierrasun.com
