Home base World Series party: Make your Tahoe Truckee table into a playing field

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. and#8212; You ever been to a ball game, sometimes even a really good ball game, where you find yourself leaving early because you want to get to your car before the other 23,000 attendees depart en masse? Or maybe they stopped selling beer. Your World Series party, however, need never have your guests crying foul and longing for a quick finish. Letand#8217;s start, as usual, with the tableand#8230;
There are a few ways you could go here. The first is a no-brainer; white plastic cloth with red tape crisscrossed over the surface, to resemble a baseball. The second is for the frustrated Martha Stewarts out there, or maybe you just have a little extra time on your hands or maybe Joan down the road already has dibs on the Giant Baseball Table. It involves a little more effort, but the result, a full-blown baseball field complete with diamond, will knock your guestand#8217;s red socks off. Basically this piece de resistance starts with a green plastic cloth laid over the entire surface of your table. Next take a brown plastic table cloth (yes, they do sell them, Iand#8217;ll tell you where in a minute), fold it in half and place over the green tablecloth, centered. Adjust the brown so the corners are pointing to opposite ends of the table. Got it? Good. There you have your field and your diamond. Next use some double-stick tape on the back of four white paper plates and affix in the appropriate areas on the brown to resemble bases. Voila! Baseball field table.
To take it a step further you could staple a plastic pennant banner around the edges of the entire table, which would also help hold the whole thing together. To celebrate your team, buy paper plates and cutlery in the appropriate colors. Dress the Party in Incline Village Market Place has a huge selection of tablecloths, pennant banners, plates and cutlery to set you up. Actually, they have a full-blown baseball section where you can get little baseball hackey sacks, snack bags and probably a fat lady singing.
For the spread we are thinking (you guessed it) hot dogs. But not just any dogs. We are talking ballpark franks. No, not the and#8220;plump when you cook and#8216;em!and#8221; brand, but real Fen Franks prepared a la Fenway Stadium. For dessert, in-betweens and just because it is the right, all American thing to do (plus thereand#8217;s that cool song) I offer homemade Cracker Jacks. You set a huge bowl of this in the middle of your table or use the afore mentioned snack bags. The prizes are up to you. I recommend cash.

At Fenway they use Kayem or Kahns beef franks and while their ad specifically says and#8220;Available in grocery stores everywhere except New Yorkand#8221; I have yet to find them in the Truckee/Tahoe vicinity. But hey, I am the recipe girl, not an investigative reporter. A good old Oscar Myer is a fine substitute. Just steam or boil them, put on bun with brown mustard and a little relish.
Makes five cups
1 cup salted beer nuts (peanuts)
4 cups fully popped corn, lightly salted
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 tsp. Vanilla
1/2 tsp. baking soda
Place peanuts and popcorn in large shallow roasting pan. Set aside.
Melt butter, sugar, and corn syrup over medium heat and boil for five minutes without stirring. Remove from heat and add vanilla and baking soda.
Pour over popcorn/nut mixture and toss. Bake for one hour at 250 degrees, stirring several times. Cool on wax paper. Break apart and store in airtight containers.
