TAHOE/TRUCKEE – The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series is Lake Tahoe’s West Shore from local author Carol A. Jensen and the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society. The book boasts a vast collection of vintage photographs offering memories of days gone by.

First sighted by John C. Fremont and Charles Preuss in 1844, the “Lake of the Sky” beckons to pioneers and adventurers today as it has through history. Author Mark Twain, popular lecturer George Wharton James, industrialist Duane Bliss and film star Elizabeth Taylor all found inspiration in its secluded sylvan beaches. Washoe tribal members held Da’o’ a ga (“Edge of the Lake”) as their paradise until lumber demands for the Comstock Lode all but stripped the dense forests.

Gradually, lakefront property became private retreats and hostelries catering to tourists happily arriving from around the world for winter skiing, summer boating, and holidays. The author presents many never before published vintage images, from private collections and archives such as the North Lake Tahoe Historical Society, the Tahoe Yacht Club, and the California State Library.

Highlights include a map listing of all the historic resorts on the West shore, the area’s transformation of depleted timber resource into international destination resort: a resort that rail, steam ship, and automobile transportation created.

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at http://www.arcadiapublishing.com or 888-313-2665.
