Perry Norris of the Truckee Donner Land Trust, left, and Lance Conn attended the book signing reception at the Carmel Gallery in Truckee.

The Carmel Gallery is an oasis in downtown Truckee filled with the fine art landscape photography of Tahoe Donner residents Elizabeth and Olof Carmel. Last Saturday evening the gallery hosted a book signing party for photographer Elizabeth Carmel’s latest, and#8220;The Changing Range of Light,and#8221; Portraits of the Sierra Nevada (her first book, and#8220;Brilliant Watersand#8221; is a bestseller, currently in its third printing) Carmel’s new book showcases her stunning photographic talents and focuses on how climate change is affecting the Sierra landscape. Two scientists, Dr. Robert Coats and Dr. Geoffry Schladow contributed to the climate change sections of the book, and both were on hand to help Carmel launch (and sign) her book.

More than 200 supporters and Carmel devotees flowed in and out of the gallery, scooping up books for themselves, and gifts, grazing on culinary treats from Dragonfly restaurant created by chef Larry Abney and Ricky Sausser, sipping wines from Truckee River Winery, and finishing off with coffee from Rick Reynolds of Sierra Pacific Organic Coffee Company. More than 60 breathtaking prints appear in the book, featuring familiar sights like the Truckee River in autumn and winter, snow dunes of the Euer Valley, floating clouds of a summer sunset over Martis Valley, and the profuse lupine in bloom at Lake Forest in Tahoe City. Poetry accompanies many photographs. A portion of proceeds from Saturday evening’s book sales will benefit the Truckee Donner Land Trust, a cause which is close to the Carmel’s hearts.

Some of those standing in line to have their books signed were Janet and Chuck Zipkin, Carole Sesko and Richard Anderson, Peter Werbel, Barbara Green, Seana Doherty and Perry Norris, Eddie Ancinas, Valerie Forte, Carolyn Wallace Dee, Laurel and Tom Lippert, Georgine Casella, Nancy Davis, Carol Savory and George Koster, Judy Howes, Hans Standteiner, Stephanie Rogerson, Kellie Wright, Carla and Tom Beebe, Greyson Howard, Mary Eaton, Dot and Larry Mace, Julie Bradley, Joan Jones, Peggy and Craig Lindsay, Barney Drake, Jody Sterling, Shelley Mcginity, Rick Reynolds, Andrea and Steve Miller, Peggy Ricketts, Lisa Wallace, Kaitlin Backlund, Emily and Lance Conn, Carol Levy, Tanya Africa, Penny and Bob Fink, Wendy and Sean Connolly, and Dr. Nina Winans and her family.

Hard to believe it was the 14th of the annual and#8220;In the Moodand#8221; ski and snowboard multimedia benefit Dec. 3. Droves of ski and snowboard enthusiasts flocked to the Resort at Squaw Creek maxing out the parking lot. This year the event benefited two organizations: Truckee Community Christmas via canned food donations (TCC also gives away toys, clothes, and food gift cards to local families), and the Tahoe Forest Cancer Center which received more than $8,000 from the mammoth raffle proceeds.

Close to 500 guests, mostly Gen X and Yers, jammed the Alpine ballroom, resulting in standing room only. Co-hosts Todd Offenbacher of the Resorts Sports Network and Tahoe TV’s Eric Brandt warmed up the audience for the photo and video program which showcased the work of filmmakers Mike Marvin, Scott Gaffney, Craig Beck, Tom Day, Mike and Dave Hatchett, Brad Holmes as well nationally acclaimed photographers Tom Lippert, Keoki Flagg, Niobe Burden, Court Leve, and co-organizer of the event Hank de Vre. Local author and other co-organizer of the event, Robert and#8220;Froand#8221; Frohlich, currently a cancer patient, told the audience, and#8220;If this can’t get you moved tonight, then you don’t have blood running through your veins, and you’re just a mannequin.and#8221;

After intermission a tribute to the late, legendary Squaw Valley resident Shane McConkey remembered the local icon as a remarkable person and adventurer. Kudos to Meg de Vre and her crew of volunteers for organizing the raffle.
