IVGID GM’s Corner: I’m thankful for a great staff here at IVGID

Typically, employee recruitment is one of the biggest challenges for a local government in a small, remote community. Thankfully, that is not the case for IVGID.
From my first day on the job, I was amazed at the quality and the stability of the workforce. We've not only been able to recruit, but to maintain and develop an employee base that is up to the task of meeting the expectations of our community.
Succession planning is not just a buzzword at IVGID. We've recently had the opportunity to hire from within in a number of cases, as well as attract quality employees when there wasn't an internal candidate available for a position.
For example, many ski resorts would be devastated to lose someone with the depth and breadth of experience that Brad Wilson brought to the job. However, Brad's experience also gave him the ability to ensure that a successor was in place when he left us for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I'm very thankful that Brad gave Mike Bandelin the growth opportunities and mentoring to ensure that Diamond Peak would remain in good hands upon his departure. Over the past month, as Interim General Manager of Diamond Peak, Mike has ensured that we are again poised for a successful year at our ski area.
I was also pleasantly surprised that we were able to promote from within when selecting our new Communications Coordinator. This new position was an open recruitment, with applicants from multiple states.

With over 60 applications, it included a high number of top applicants. After an exhaustive interview process, our own Misty Moga was the ultimate choice.
Misty has worked for the District for nearly eight years as the Parks & Recreation Administrative Specialist. Misty is from San Diego where she graduated Summa Cum Laude from San Diego State University with Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Communication and a double minor in Native American Studies and Recreation Administration.
She has also served as the Recording Secretary for the Washoe County Citizen Advisory Boards since 2008. Additionally, Misty has worked for the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe and Intero Real Estate Services in the Incline Village/Crystal Bay community.
She has volunteered and has been an active member in this community which allowed her to develop relationships and working knowledge of our community, various agencies and businesses.
She is excited about this promotion, and looks forward to serving the District in this new capacity. While many of you already know Misty, I'm sure the rest of you will get to meet her as she serves as the public face of the District.
Many of the duties related to this position were previously the responsibility of our Marketing Manager, Kayla Anderson.
When Kayla decided to leave her position recently, we also conducted an open recruitment that generated applicants from across the country. While we didn't hire from within, we didn't have to look far.
Paul Raymore is IVGID's new Marketing Manager. Paul most recently served as Director of Marketing and Sales for Homewood Ski Area. He has also worked in Marketing at Alpine Meadows and served as a former editor of the Tahoe World newspaper and Tahoe.com.
Paul was also the Internet Project Manager for Sierra Nevada Media Group/Sierra Sun. Prior to working in the Tahoe Basin, Paul worked in the Technology industry in San Jose and Reno. He is a graduate of Stanford University.
Paul's tech background will serve us well as we implement our new tech-friendly point of sale systems at all of our venues.
We also recruited across the country for our new Community Services Director. This position will oversee all of our recreation services including golf, ski, tennis, the Rec Center and our marketing of those venues.
Sharon Heider assumed the duties of Community Services Director on November 2. Sharon most recently served as Director of Beaches, Parks and Recreation for the City of San Clemente, Calif.
Prior to San Clemente, Sharon was Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Palm Springs. She has also worked for the cities of Irvine and San Juan Capistrano in southern California. Sharon started her career as a Project Manager for a Planning and Landscape Architecture firm.
Sharon was the unanimous choice of three selection panels – one composed of members of the public, one composed of peers from nearby communities and one composed of IVGID's senior team – who interviewed nine qualified applicants from across the country.
