Letter to the Editor: Measure R makes healthy sense
May 27, 2014
I moved to Truckee 28 years ago because I fell in love with the community and lifestyle. To live and work in such beautiful surroundings is special and a privilege I do not take for granted. Over the years as Truckee has grown, I appreciate our open space and the ability to get there without having to drive.
As a Nurse Practitioner practicing family medicine in our community I realize a healthy life style is the best prevention of many diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. When I think of all the billions of dollars spent on prevention and treatment of chronic diseases I am dismayed that we have made very little progress.
What if there was a "magic pill" to prevent many of these diseases? As it turns out, there is. It is exercise, including less driving, more walking, running, riding our bicycles, and getting out and enjoying the great outdoors we have in our area.
This is why I'm voting "yes" on Measure R on June 3rd. It is a quarter-cent sales tax (25 cents for each $100 spent on a taxable purchase) that will go exclusively to construction and maintenance of trails in our community. The funds will stay in our community rather than shared by the entire state of California.
Access to safe trails for kids going to school, adults commuting to work, families hiking, and running and biking for recreation is within our reach right now.
My husband and I plan on living in this community for many years to come, and plan to continue to be hiking, running, biking, on our amazing trails. Today, trails and bikeways for a community are the normal. Please join me and vote YES on Measure R.
