Letter to the Editor: Shop locally this Friday
November 25, 2008
Go ahead, sleep in this Friday. Have a nice breakfast with your family. Then, if you plan on getting that Holiday shopping done, stay here in Tahoe. Save the gas, save the headaches of fighting crowds, and save some time.
By supporting local businesses this holiday season, you not only help to build a stronger local economy that is more resistant to market pressures, you reduce your environmental impact.
Did you know that non-profit organizations and community groups receive an average of three times more support from small, locally-owned businesses than they do from larger businesses? Or that a dollar spent in an independent locally-owned store is usually spent six to 15 times before it leaves the community?
There are a variety of shops in Truckee alone. Many have unique products from local artists, support fair trade and utilize reclaimed materials. And, if you haven’t checked lately, have competitive prices.
Many are owner-run and you can meet those owners, find out why they chose to have a business in a small town, and learn more about your community.
So, have a nice lie in on Friday, linger at a local coffee shop, and then head down to the shops in Truckee, or Tahoe City, or where ever you may be located. Imagine what you can do with the extra hour or two you’ll save yourself. And, imagine how thankful your locally owned independent shops will be.
