Letter to the Editor: Support the libraries

Phebe Bell
Truckee

I am writing in support of our local libraries. I am concerned about some of the options being considered by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors.

Clearly the Board has some difficult decisions to make for the county in these rough economic times, but I believe it is possible to make good financial decisions while keeping quality libraries open.

I have followed the issue for the past few months and feel strongly that the option of keeping the libraries under public control, and simply reducing staffing and hours across the board is the best solution to the challenges at hand. I also feel very strongly that we need to keep our children’s librarians.

I developed a love of libraries as a child and#8212; the weekly trip to explore the vast shelves of seemingly endless books was a highpoint in my life. I have used the Truckee library for my children since they were babies.

Hopefully this is helping to build a life-long love of books and reading for them (and building future library users in this high tech era). From story hours, to help finding an age appropriate, ability appropriate book, the librarians are critical.

For my older daughter, an avid reader, the expertise of the children’s librarian in youth fiction is key to her continuing to find new series or authors that help her maintain her love of reading. The fact that we know that the newest and best titles have been researched and purchased for the children’s section by a librarian who knows both books and children keeps my children wanting to go back again and again.

Please let our supervisors know if you agree that we must protect the precious resource of quality local libraries and#8212; and children’s librarians.
