Letter to the editor: To the concerned school district parents
April 23, 2009
I would have written earlier but I had the feeling that the board would make their decision with or without the input from the parents. Not that they don’t value our opinion, but they are trained professionals who have experience in education and know what is best for our children.
I attended the grueling five-hour decision making meeting last with hopes that there would be no change at all. I guess I was wishful thinking but after having time to process the decision and sleep on it (sort of) I am honestly pleased with the outcome.
Our small town of Tahoe City will have the diversity that it was lacking and our suffering businesses will thrive. Yes there will be more busing, but the district kept that down as minimal as they could.
When my husband and I were looking for a place to live, I really liked Carnelian Bay and loved the idea of our daughters attending the emersion program in Kings Beach as my oldest was taking Spanish classes at the age of 3 in Truckee. But when we moved into our home in Tahoe City, I was also very pleased to be in such a warm, friendly community where my daughters could attend the same elementary school that I myself attended.
I welcome this change with open arms and hope that those of you that are upset or frightened that your child will be left behind or bullied by an eighth grader, please put your faith in the people who worked long and hard to make this decision to better both communities and help every single one of our children succeed.
As far as the “over pinking” I think the board realizes this and will do what they can to keep those teachers where they belong, which is educating, and caring for our kids the way they always have.

I myself am so excited that my girls will be exposed to the language and culture that I was not fortunate enough to have when I grew up here. I recently traveled to Mexico and met so many young people that were bi-lingual.
I was so tickled to see this, wishing my girls had this sort of opportunity and now they do! I thank everyone who has been involved for their time and effort they have put into this whole thing. Lake Tahoe would not be such a magical and wonderful place if it weren’t for the people who live here.
