Adrian Lucas Springer was supposed to be born on Christmas, but he waited a few days and rang in the New Year as the first baby born in Truckee in 2004.

Adrian – the first born of Truckee-residents Justine Lasdin and Craig Springer – was born at 12:40 a.m. on New Year’s Day after his mom endured 26 hours of labor and a Cesarean section.

But after putting up a fight for more than a day (actually his head, at 13.5 inches in diameter, wouldn’t fit), Adrian’s mom said he has been pretty calm.

“He’s been good – a little mellow baby,” Lasdin said. “He’s spoiled with all of his gifts.”

Tahoe Forest Hospital gave Adrian a gift basket to honor him as the first baby of the New Year.

At birth, Adrian was 22 inches long and weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces. He has brown hair and green eyes.

Two babies were born at Tahoe Forest Hospital on New Year’s Day this year. Another baby, Alexa Storm Randel of Incline Village, was delivered by her father on Interstate 80 on their way to Tahoe Forest Hospital, and the placenta was delivered at the hospital.

“We’ve never had that many (births) on New Year’s before,” said Careen Holman, a nurse in the hospital’s women and family center.

“Half the time we don’t have a birth until the second or the third,” she added..
