Meet Your Neighbor: Chris Arth
August 6, 2007
How long have you lived in the area? For 27 years. From where?Originally Im from Southern California, and then prior to living in Truckee I was in the Bay Area. What brought you up here?My husband at the time wanted to live in a mountain community, so I followed him up here.So what has kept you here?It was such a fabulous place to raise children. We had two boys, and we couldnt imagine any other place to raise children the small community, the outdoor recreation and the love of nature. How old are your boys now?Theyre 25 and 21. What are they up to?They are both in college, the oldest is at the University of Nevada in Reno, studying music. My younger son is at San Diego State studying business. I also have a step-son, who is 21 and studying bio-psych at the University of California, Santa Barbara. And my step-daughter Leah is 15, and shell be a sophomore at Truckee High. My husband is also named Chris and is a pediatrician. You said you teach, so what exactly do you do?Im a different kind of teacher. Im a contract teacher. I teach a parent participation program with toddlers and their parents. I have three different classes and we meet weekly. Its basically a parent support group and a time to just chill and play with your child. How did this start?I have an elementary teaching credential and specialization in early childhood, and I also taught Gymboree in southern California. When we moved to Truckee there was nothing for parents of small children to do. There were no pre-preschool programs. I had been to Mommy and Me, I had taught Gymboree, and I thought somebody should be doing something for parents of toddlers and toddlers in this town. So I went to the rec center with a proposal. How long ago was that? That was 20 years ago. This fall will be my 20th year of teaching. We started out with one class a week and now its three nights a week.Any plans to retire? Not yet.The Sierra Sun’s Joanna Hartman interviewed Arth for this week’s Meet Your Neighbor.
