Meet Your Neighbor: Scott Cross
October 8, 2007
We’ve been in the area for 14 years.
Before that I was in school in Los Angeles.
My wife and I drove around the country and decided that Truckee was one of our favorite places ” the outdoors, the clean air, the mountains and the athletic opportunities.
When we moved here it was just me and my wife. Now we have three children ” 9, 7 and 5 years old.
Streamscapes has been in business for five years and we build water features ” ponds, streams and lakes.
We do residential and commercial. About 80 percent of our business is residential.

I used to live on the American River and I was a video editor. I used to edit at night so during the days I would spend my time at the river. When we moved up here there weren’t a lot of editing opportunities. Once we started having kids we realized financially it wouldn’t be easy to make ends meet so we started looking around for business ideas.
Living on the American River, I just love water … I thought it would be a good mix of art and water.
Exactly. Video editing is very similar to building a water feature ” you’re taking pieces and putting it together and making a whole. It’s very similar, but it’s outside.
I went to Loyola Marymount and graduated with a degree in communications with a television emphasis.
Some of the stuff I did was music video, advertisements.
My creative outlet is water features. It’s outside, I get to work with my hands and it’s more physical, which I enjoy.
[My wife and I] both play volleyball and softball ” right now we play at Rideout. Then the Truckee league starts in a few weeks. We play on the beach in the summer. And my wife’s an avid softball player. And we ski and snowmobile.
I have been a national ski patroller for 17 years. I was the ski patrol director at Tahoe Donner until just this year, to make the business year-round. Skiing is obviously a huge part of our life. But I’m still going to patrol ” at Sugar Bowl at Squaw.
I like the unpredictability and the interesting medical cases. I enjoy helping people, but what’s really fun about ski patrolling is not knowing what’s going to happen and getting that adrenaline rush with those more serious injuries ” and then fixing it.
If we have interests, especially as a family, it’s to go camping and boating. That’s what we do every weekend. It’s local stuff but we have a camper and a boat and usually spend weekends as a family in Jackson Meadows, Stampede, anywhere the Tahoe area.
In the winter we do more of the snowmobiling and skiing. But it’s all family time outside of work.
Kelly just started in kindergarten, she’s the last one. My wife’s an occupational therapist at Tahoe Forest Hospital.
The change in seasons is my very favorite thing. I love the idea that it’s not all the same all the time, that everything changes.
