My Turn: Clean up after your dog: It’s the law
February 24, 2008
Wow! While reading international news at Adnkronos.com this week, I saw the headline from Tehran, “Iranian Man Sentenced to 4 Months in Jail, 30 Lashes for Walking Dog.”
As sad as the reality of the story is, I found it interesting and timely in light of my recent quest to keep the city streets of Truckee (and my driveway) free of dog poop. I too am a dog lover and enjoy a walk with a dog as much as any. However, I feel it very irresponsible and downright rude to leave dog waste on streets, sidewalks and driveways.
Local newsflash: It’s not only rude but it is against the law. Town of Truckee Ordinance 8.01.460(b) states: To damage or destroy the property of another person or public property, or to repeatedly deposit its body waste fluid or matter upon such property. First offense of the ordinance carries a base fine of $100, which progressively increases another $100 with each subsequent offense; penalty assessments added by law will more then triple each $100.
Since it seems many of our dog owners must be unaware of the law, I would like signs posted to make them aware. Oh, I hear the outcry, I hear the song: “Signs, signs, everywhere there’s signs!” However, if people can’t take it upon themselves to be good citizens, there leaves the necessity for reminders.
Many a reader may be feeling uncomfortable right now and others may feel angry. Your mind is flashing back to the morning scene when you walked your dog, he did his business like a good dog, you (if you cared enough) glanced around to see if anyone was looking as you walked away leaving the cra.., excuse me, poop behind right in front of someone’s driveway; shame on you, not your dog.
Others, the angry and completely inconsiderate, are probably thinking, “This is Truckee, land of the free dog! Our dogs have rule and reign of the forests, the streets and the neighborhoods! Where will they poop?”

Try taking a walk down many of our streets right now and you will find many are full of dog poop! Let’s face it, Truckee is a dog heaven and literally thousands of dogs live the good life here while giving us all great pleasure with their incredible love and companionship. I would even venture to say that the majority of Truckee dog citizenry are medium to large size, making the poop issue a bit “overwhelming” to say the least.
Yes, I understand that with the snow, it makes it difficult to take your dog into the forest right now, so more of you are walking on the streets, or worse yet, letting your dog roam free to relieve itself wherever. Well, if you cannot find the time or wherewithal to take the dog out into the forest, or keep the waste in your own yard, and instead, you walk the streets, then you certainly should carry a baggie and clean up after your pet. It is the right thing to do, it is the responsible thing to do, and
it should be the only thing you do.
We are so blessed to live in a free country where we don’t have to worry about being sent to jail and lashed for simply taking our dog out for a walk; without even leaving behind any poop! So, please don’t take advantage of our freedoms, rather be good pet owners, be good neighbors, be good citizens, and please clean up the cra… poop!
